What is Basic Principles of Positron Emission Tomography (PET)??
* A radioactive isotope is injected and breakdowns, emitting a b +-particle.
* Inside a short expanse, the b +-particle bumps into an electron and the two annihilate, making a two of g -rays.
* By noticing and reconstructing where the g -rays of come from, we can assess the location and engrossment of radio-isotope.
Two Typical PET
Studies
FDG Study of Patient with Stroke
FDG “Brain Activation” Study
CYCLOTRON
RADIO-CHEMISTRY LAB.
THE PET SCANNER ITSELF
WHAT IS PET?
* Functional brain imaging using H217O or radio-labelled glucose (fluoro-deoxy glucose FDG).
* Metabolic studies
* Receptor studies
